São Miguel do Gostoso has the most beautiful white sandy beaches that you can imagine.
The urban beaches of Sao Miguel do Gostoso are: Praia de Ponta do Santo Cristo and Praia do Cardeiro (both excellent for windsurf and kitesurf), Praia da Xepa (the tourist center of Sao Miguel do Gostoso) and Praia do Maceió.
Praia de Tourinhos and Praia do Marco are slightly further away from the city but easily accessible on a day trip.

Praia da Xepa (Xepa Beach)
Praia da Xepa (Xepa Beach) is the most central beach of town and is considered the Tourist Center of Sao Miguel do Gostoso. Here, in the early hours of the morning, you can watch the local fisherman bringing in their catch of the day or in the early evening watch the local youth playing football. Other social and cultural events also take place in this area througout the year, including Carnaval and the celebrations of New Year´s Eve. Here there is a great selection of guesthouses (pousadas), restaurants and bars, and a windsurf and kitesurf school.
Why the name Xepa Beach? According to Mr. Severino Gomes da Silva (popularly known as Mr. 20) Xepa beach was named when in 1944 an army squadron was deployed to Sao Miguel do Gostoso and each evening would distribute leftover food (the xepa) to the local population on the beach that now bears the name Xepa.
Praia da Ponta do Santo Cristo (Ponta do Santo Cristo Beach)
Praia da Ponta do Santo Cristo (Ponta do Santo Cristo Beach) is about 20 minutes walk along the beach from Xepa Beach and 10 minutes from Cardeiro. This area has a good selection of guesthouses and windsurf and kitesurf schools and is famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing around the world.
Why the name Ponta do Santo Cristo Beach? Legend has it that in 1501 after the discovery of Marco Beach, the Gaspar Lemos expedition navigated to the south and was spotted by an indigineous group. The expedition landed assuming the Indians were civilised, however, once on the beach, they were attacked. The Indians imprisoned the priest from the exbidition and ate him in front of the rest of the crew who flew under strong attack of arrows. Later when natives found a crucifix on this spot the beach was given the name Ponta do Santo Cristo Beach.
Praia do Tourinhos (Tourinhos Beach)
Praia do Tourinhos (Tourinhos Beach) is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Rio Grande do Norte. It is about a 15 minute drive from the center of Sao Miguel do Gostoso and easily accessible by buggy, quadricyclo, car, bicycle or moto taxi. In this area you can see the Suspiro de Baleia (Whale´s Blow Hole) and the ancient petrified rocks. You can swim in the sea here at high and low tide. Due to it being situated in a cove, the sea is more calm here than in Sao Miguel do Gostoso town. There are no guesthouses (pousadas) located on this beach however there is an excellent restaurant and some beach stalls.
Why the name Tourinhos Beach? It is said that this is where the Dutch took refuge having been expelled from Touros in 1501.
Praia do Cardeiro (Cardeiro Beach)
Praia do Cardeiro (Cardeiro Beach) is located approximately 10 minutos walk along the beach from Xepa Beach. In this area you can explore the rocks in the sea at low tide and the picturesque lake which increases in volume during the rainy season. Cardeiro Beach has a good selection of guesthouses (pousadas), restaurants and bars, and a windsurf and kitesurf school.
Why the name Cardeiro Beach? The name of this beach was given due to the fact that the Cardeiro (Cactus) plant in this area survives despite the constant attack of sea water during the high tides.
Praia do Maceio (Maceio Beach)
Praia do Maceio (Maceio Beach), is about 10 minutes walk along the beach from Xepa Beach in the direction of Praia do Tourinhos. In this area you will find a good selection of restaurantes and bars. This area of the beach is quiet.
Why the name Maceio Beach? Maceios, according to local residents, were small ponds that used to form during the periods of high tide. Today, the maceios are no longer created due to a large sand dune that has formed and blocked the water passing.
Arraial do Marco Beach
Arraial do Marco Beach is a beautiful beach, about 30 minutes drive from the center of Sao Miguel do Gostoso. This beach is easily accessible by buggy, quadricycle or car. In this area you wil find some restaurants and beach stalls. There are no guesthouses (pousadas) located on Arraial de Marco beach.
Why the name Arraial do Marco Beach? According to historians, on August 7th 1501 the Gaspar de Lemos expedition landed on this spot. The Potiguar historian, Lenine Pinto, also believes that this is also the place that Pedro Alvares Cabral landed for the first time in the year 1500.
