The legend says that in
1501, after placing the
colonial mark at Marco
beach, the expedition of
Gaspar de Lemos sailed
south and passed a
protruding point where
they noticed a group of
indigineous people waving
to them. They landed amd
decided to approach this
group since they appeared
civilised. However,
they were taken by
surprise when the
indigineous group
captured, killed and ate
their priest n full view
of the other members of
the expedition who
were, by this time,
trying to escape. Some
time later the crucifix of
the priest was found
giving origin to the name
of the place - Ponta do
Santo
Cristo.
